Fa’afafine
June 10, 2021 @ 11:00 am – 11:13 am
“If you want something done, ask a fa’afafine.”
Who is the population that is called Fa’afafine? Fa’afafine are those assigned males at birth whose gendered behaviours are, to varying degrees, feminine’(Schmidt, 2016: 287), but without considering themselves neither women nor men, living in Samoa, American Samoa, and New Zealand. In Samoan tradition, Fa’ afafine are one of the four cultural genders, they have historical existence and therefore enjoy a degree of cultural legitimacy, or at least they used to enjoy before the arrival of the colonials. Let’s meet them! Enjoy!
