In the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, there is a matrifocal Zapotec community where Muxes are culturally recognised as the third gender. Muxes have been assigned as boys at birth but their gender expression changed during their lifetime. They are seen as neither women nor as men, but as combining and incorporating dimensions of other genders.
